We are thinking of going home via Birdsville and Cameron Corner which means right now we’re as close to Uluru and Kings Canyon as we’ll get unless we drive all the way back out again after my hike. So we decided to head off to see both areas before l continue along the Larapinta. Luckily for us, Uluru re-opened yesterday! Got to love a satellite messenger which lets you find out those things when you’re in the middle of nowhere.
After arriving at Kings Canyon we realised we weren’t going to have enough time to walk around there and get to Uluru for the Field of Lights, so we carried on all the way to Uluru. While driving along we willed and willed a picnic spot to appear. Alas, it did not, so we set up a makeshift Jubbie lunch spot on the side of the road. Of course, 20 minutes down the road we found a great picnic area complete with trees, tables and a water tank!

There are all these melons along the side of the road. The vines they’re growing on look dead and it’s amazing they can manage to extract enough nutrients to grow the plentiful supply they do.

Field of Lights at Uluru was amazing – thanks Arianne for the recommendation! Absolutely stunning. You can’t capture it adequately in photos. Apparently it’s staying there indefinitely now which is a great thing.

We had a late dinner before returning to our tent at Ayers Rock Campground.
The campground is so well maintained. The bathrooms are spotless and in new condition, the lawns are pretty good given we’re in the desert and the staff were super friendly and helpful. It got down to 1 degree overnight. I slept in jamies, a jacket, a beanie, with a puffer wrapped around my legs and I was just warm enough!
Kerry thanks for sharing your travel adventure. I’m enjoying the trip vicariously through your stories and photos which is the best I can do at the moment in Stage 4 lockdown.
I’ve heard so much about the Larapinta trail and it’s on my to do list, one day. A very good choice!
And the field of lights is another highlight that I’ve read a lot about so it’s definitely added to the list. Incredible photos, but must be so much better to be there and experience it first hand.
I’m looking forward to the next episode…
Take care of yourselves and come home safely.
Cheers Carolyn
