Day 4: Magpie Flat Camping Area to Ghost Gully Campground – 19.7kms, 4 hours, ascent 527m, 27k steps, 0 snakes, 0 hikers

My Garmin told me the weather forecast was for thunderstorms and heavy rain starting at 11am and due to last all day until 1am.  I lay in my warm bed deciding whether to set out or not. We could see the weather coming in towards us,  dark moody skies and very windy.  I only had 20kms to do today and it would be largely flat,  walking across the plains.  I decided to go for it,  with my rain jacket and pants in the outside pocket of my backpack within easy reach. After a delicious breakie of savoury oats, I set off, back along Blue Waterhole trail to the Junction of the AAWT at Mosquito Trail.

It was windy and cloudy walking across the plain. I saw five dead horses not too far off the track, the only horses I’ve seen this trip. It was really easy walking and I did the 20kms in just under four hours. In the most accurate display of weather forecasting I’ve seen, it started raining at 10:50, first with a couple of drops and then a heavy downpour. I just had enough time to get my rain jacket and brolly out. I made it to Ghost Gully just after 11am to Jubbie at up under the awning.

We hung around at Ghost Gully Campground in the rain for a while,  then drove to Adaminiby for hot chips and potato cakes. Mmmmmmmmm.   Funny,  last time we were at this campground, it snowed. We’re destined to be in the cold here.
