Day 3: Rest Day

Last night we kept hearing this strange low, raspy growling followed by thumping. We looked out the window and saw just near our tent these two large male kangaroos fighting. They were holding onto each other with their arms, standing on their tails and kicking each other in the stomach or chest. The kicks made these huge thumping sounds. They kept going up and down a small incline very aggressively fighting for at least 15 minutes.  One of them finally gave up and the other proceeded to have sex with as many of the female kangaroos hanging around as would let him. They all seemed very much more interested in eating grass than in him,  not that it seemed to bother him at all.  Thank goodness for the full moon – what a spectacle!

Today was a well earned rest day. I slept terribly because my feet and back were so sore. I should have got out of bed and got some drugs,  but couldn’t be bothered.  I was awake on and off all night in pain which finally went away shortly before sunrise.

We had a leisurely breakie followed by a camp shower then off to Talbingo for coffee.  We forgot the shower cubby, so Jubble bought a new one that hangs off the side of the car and doesn’t have a roof. It was pretty nice having a warm shower under the sun.

We saw no brumbies again at all today.  I feel torn – I get the need for culling given the damage they do to the environment,  but hate the inhumanity of it.

After coffee at Talbingo we drove around unsuccessfully looking for mobile coverage. Having no luck,  we stopped instead for lunch (refried beans,  avocado,  tomato,  crunchy combo,  green leaves and salsa wraps) on the side of the lake, then found a spot with coverage on our way back towards the campground. We did clothes washing back at camp and just did camp things until dinner (chickpea curry) and ready for bed.  My body is pretty sore. Fingers crossed it’s feeling better in the morning.
