Day 8: Red Box Campsite to Rumpffs Flat 17/04/22 18.5kms 6hr 45

Last night we slept with all the windows open and just the fly screens closed so we could see the bush and the stars. So lovely. I’d fluffed up the doona so we were toasty warm. It was 9 degrees in the morning – much more civilised than 0 degrees yesterday! For Jubbie’s birthday I had squirreled away a couple of really nice bottles of wine and felt like a legend that he hadn’t discovered them before I gave them to him this morning. After breakie I headed off up a steep spur behind Melbourne Grammar School camp. This one had switchbacks all the way to the top so it was like walking up a steep path rather than climbing. At the top I met the dads and six kids all out bushwalking around the Crinoline Track. After a chat I headed off down the other side. There path was super well marked with lots of pink ribbons which I appreciated. I followed a steep spur down to Macalister River at the bottom. It was shallow with perfect pebbles and wasn’t flowing too quickly – the perfect river! After crossing some farmland, a dirt track zig zagged up to a saddle, then back down the other side. I could see some cows up the hill sitting in the shade. I was thinking how lovely they were when one stood up and was watching me. Then the others stood up and they started walking down, then running. Much less lovely. I was hoping I could get to the gate before they got to me! Until I realised they were on the other side of a fence…

The rest of the day was on 2WD dirt roads so pretty fast, easy walking. Surprisingly only a few cars passed me. The road ended up zig zagging down to Rumpffs Flat campground which was quite busy, but luckily also quite big. No idea what it is with groups of campers needing music on. And Australia flags flying off their tents. Jubbie got the perfect spot – right down the end, not too close to the tent flying group, close but not too close to a toilet (yay!), near water at Mount Skene Creek and complete with a picnic table and chairs! We had Singapore noodles for dinner and shared a bottle of birthday wine. Sadly the forecast looks like we’re in for rain over the next couple of days.
