Day 2: King Spur Track to Ritchies Road 11/04/22 11.9kms

We were so toasty in our roof top tent last night! We woke up to a beautiful sunrise (photos don’t do it justice) and an icy wind. I had a short day today, so pottered around and didn’t leave until 8:30 after having savoury oats and a cup of tea.

King Spur Track was windy and chilly! The first part of the day was on 4WD track for a short while before heading across peat bog plains. At the start there was a clearly discernible foot track where people’s steps had pushed down the grass. But it’s really easy to lose a track in grass like that, especially when you’re trying not to step into water you can’t see. But when your feet are wet, they are wet and then it doesn’t really matter where you step after that! I was so grateful to not be doing this in hot weather though – I’m sure there would have been a snake at every foot fall! I kept walking until I found an old fence, then followed it along. From there I picked up the track again and followed it through grasslands and small patches of trees. There was a point at which I had no idea which direction the track was supposed to be going, but stumbled into a set of tyre tracks which turned out to be White Timber Spur North Track, my track.

It was a pretty gentle walk along the spur track. Towards the end I could look out and see the road Jubbie would have driven along, Ritchies Road. I arrived at Camp Jubbie just after 12 ready for a cup of tea and lunch. It felt like a really short day, but there aren’t any other options to keep going unless I wanted to do another 20kms to get to the next meeting spot.

While Jubbie had been working out the best place to camp, he moved a rock near a piece of carpet and a big black angry snake came out to tell him he wasn’t welcome there. Once it was sure he got the message, it went back inside its carpet to bed!

After having some wraps for lunch, Jubbie boiled water and we both had warm showers in the new camp shower he bought. The water was warmer than warm and it felt so good to wash my hair and self. The less good feeling was having to get out of the shower tent into the windy 10 degree air!

Best camp shower ever!

We went for a bit of a walk, did some research for the next couple of days and just hung out. We were so cold we ended up sitting in the car for awhile. For dinner Jubbie made a delicious chickpea and tofu curry which we ate in the car with the heater turned to high on our feet listening to some staticy ABC radio.

Because of course if there’s a sign, you should shoot it
