Day 5: Rest Day at Old Adaminaby 2/12/19

We woke up today to snow!

No wonder we felt cold last night! Chef Jublé made some delicious bush porridge – you’ll note the difference between my cold porridge from day 3 and this one!

We packed up and headed off for Old Adaminany where Jub had camped next to a lake on our first night apart. We didn’t know if we’d come back to the same place or camp somewhere different, but packed up to keep our options open. On the way it snowed and the car told us it was “icy” and 0 to 1 degrees!

When we arrived at the camping ground l saw the sweetest sight – a sign for cabins with ensuites! I was sold. After several days of hiking and sponge baths my hair had solidified. The combination of sweat, sunblock and oil had done amazing things to it. It no longer moved as l did. And my finger nails were virtually unrecognisable.

So we moved into our little cabin and had amazing hot showers then went out for a lunch of potato cakes! We weren’t quite full so we followed up our potato cakes with some hot chips. Then half an apple each just to balance things out.

We spent the afternoon trying to work out if there was any possible way of shortening the upcoming four nights apart by meeting anywhere along the way. My route is highlighted in pink on these maps.

Each time we thought we’d cracked it, Jub called the people who know these things and they told him he couldn’t drive along those particular roads, there were locked gates, etc. So l think we’re fated to spend four nights apart in a couple of nights. Luckily the weather is forecast to warm up!

We went for a bit of a walk around the lake. It’s a dam really from the Snowy hydro scheme. The original town of Adaminaby is under the lake now. They moved 102 of the original buildings to the new town of Adaminaby. Apparently when the level drops people come looking to see what turns up on the edges of the lake from the original town! An old fisherman told us the current level is 29%. Amazing to think what it would be like full.

After a specially made vegan pasta meal at the local pub – thanks Chef Melanie – I finished getting ready then lay in bed a lot of the night listening to the wind. Am l going to have to walk in that tomorrow??
